BCDC Haiti 1By1 : Sponsor A Student
BCDC Haiti 1By1 is a Christian Student Sponsorship Program recently acquired by Beraca Community Development Corp (BCDC). Beraca Community Development Corporation was established in 2001 by Beraca Baptist Church, affiliated with Converge Worldwide, for the purpose of extending ministry deeper into the community. Beraca Baptist Church and it’s Community Development Corporation are based in Brooklyn, NY and are Haitian led. In September 2020 BCDC acquired the Haiti 1By1 Program from Converge and rebranded as BCDC Haiti 1By1.
- The program supports children in elementary, secondary and vocational school.
- Funds for each student from their sponsor goes directly to contributing to the tuition portion paid by their parent(s). Parents and sponsors pay tuition together: 40% from the parent(s) and 60% from the sponsor.
- The program currently operates in three schools across Haiti: Maissad, Port Au Prince and Leogane and supports 200 students via monthly donations from sponsors.
Our goals are to:
- Preserve and cultivate parents' responsibility towards the education of their children and minimize dependency.
- Develop self-sustainable communities and educational systems that allow incremental phase-out of the sponsorship program.
Nutrition, medical care and vocational alternatives are important aspects of our program.
- Studies show low nutrition affects children’s learning and has a negative impact on their thinking skills, health and behavior. A lack of nutrition has a direct correlation with not succeeding in school. At BCDC Haiti 1By1, we want all of our students to succeed therefore, a nutrition program is imperative.
- A doctor visiting the school every month will ensure that our students’s health is maintained. When common illnesses such as tapeworms or ringworms are detected and dealt with early, a child spends less days out of school minimizing the chance of contaminating other students.
- Upon graduating secondary school, many students are faced with the reality that they cannot afford to go to college. For young women especially, not going to college or learning a trade can lead to higher pregnancy rates and no way to support their families. Vocational classes offer students the opportunity to learn a trade. This will lead to better job opportunities, a better life and an opportunity to make a positive, lasting impact in the lives of those in their community.
BCDC Haiti 1By1 coordinates between the sponsor, parent and school to allow the students receive an education that will allow them to become a productive citizen in their community. We work through our Haiti office in Port au Prince. The office is staffed by two directors. One for Haiti 1By1 and one for BCDC. They work together to run the program, engage parents and ensure that the funds donated from sponsors are properly allocated to the students with whom they are matched. Students are selected based on need, potential, aptitude and parents ability to pay their portion of their child's tuition. We also work with the teachers and school administrators at each school to monitor our student's progress.
Our sponsors are the backbone of the program. Many have been sponsors for years. Our sponsors come from all over the US and Canada. Their dedication to our students produces results that can last a lifetime.
Sponsors will:
- Interact with their sponsored student i.e. quarterly Zoom meetings or letters based on sponsor preference
- Receive quarterly reporting on their sponsored student’s progress
- Communicate with the BCDC Haiti 1By1 US office via regular meetings
- Meet other sponsors at BCDC Haiti 1By1 Sponsor Mixers
We believe this framework of sponsors, parents, partners, teachers and school administrators will continue to make BCDC Haiti 1By1 a vibrant, successful school program. You can help. Become a Student Sponsor today!
